Rosary Pea, or Abrus precatorius, is a tropical climbing plant famous for its striking seeds, which are usually glossy red with a black spot. The seeds have historically been used to make beads, rosaries and decorative objects in parts of the world, which makes the plant's poisonous reputation particularly unsettling.
The seeds contain abrin, an extremely poisonous protein that interferes with the body's ability to make proteins. The plant has earned a place in botanical collections precisely because of this bizarre combination of beauty, cultural history and serious toxicity.
This miniature specimen is entirely handmade from polymer clay, recreating the distinctive red and black seeds without containing any real Rosary Pea.
