Angel's Trumpet, Brugmansia, is a group of flowering plants native to South America, famous for their enormous, pendulous trumpet-shaped flowers. Depending on the species and variety, the flowers can appear in shades of white, yellow, peach, pink or orange.
Despite their beautiful appearance, all parts of Brugmansia are highly poisonous. The plant contains potent tropane alkaloids including scopolamine, atropine and hyoscyamine, which can cause severe poisoning if ingested.
The plant has a long and complicated history in traditional practices and ritual contexts, particularly in parts of South America. Its combination of extraordinary flowers and serious toxicity makes it almost tailor-made for a cabinet of forbidden botanical curiosities
