A climbing plant with a talent for making itself look considerably more innocent than it is.
Black Bryony, or Dioscorea communis, is a vigorous climbing plant found across much of Europe. It produces small greenish flowers followed by striking bright red berries, which contrast dramatically against its dark foliage.
The berries are poisonous if eaten, and the plant contains compounds including calcium oxalate crystals and steroidal saponins. Contact with the plant can also cause skin irritation in some people.
Despite its sinister reputation, Black Bryony has a long history in traditional herbal practices and European folklore. Its combination of twisting growth, dark leaves and vivid berries makes it a natural resident of the Cabinet.
This miniature specimen is entirely handmade from polymer clay, recreating the characteristic climbing stems and vivid berries without using any real plant material.
