Deadly Nightshade, or Atropa belladonna, is one of the most infamous poisonous plants in European folklore and herbal history. Its delicate bell-shaped flowers give way to glossy black berries, making it a particularly striking specimen despite its toxicity.
The entire plant contains potent tropane alkaloids, including atropine, scopolamine and hyoscyamine. Historically, extracts of belladonna were associated with medicine, cosmetics and poison, earning the plant a rather formidable reputation.
Its place in the Cabinet of Forbidden Curiosities is therefore well deserved. It is the sort of specimen that looks beautiful behind glass and is considerably better behaved when it stays there.
